Below is our recent interview with Merit Valdsalu, CEO and Co-Founder at Single.Earth:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: At Single.Earth we are building a platform for a nature-backed economy. We started in late 2019 with the idea to find a financial initiative for landowners to keep the nature of their land in tact. We saw too much clearcutting of forests going on around us in northern Europe, so we built a small team and started to look for a solution. Today, in early 2022 we are a team of more than 60 people scattered across the globe, with headquarters in Tallinn, Estonia, but a big part of the team working remotely from wherever they are – for example, our science team is led from France.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: We just unveiled that we are building our platform based on Solana blockchain. After a thorough evaluation, we concluded that Solana was the most robust technology out on the market, and at the same time, it was the most energy-efficient.

As Bitcoin and Ethereum use enormous amounts of energy it was only natural for us to keep energy efficiency in focus when making our key platform choice.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?

A: We are yet to launch, so not all details are available yet. but eventually Single.Earth should enable any landowner to make a living from their land without the need to cut down the trees. You log on to the platform, prove your ownership of any part of the land, and then you will get tokens for the work nature does: sequestering carbon and preserving biodiversity.

Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: Within the next 6 months, we should roll out our first products, including our offering to landowners, launch our own cryptocurrency, and hopefully also our own payment card to empower people to protect nature around us with every single payment they make.

Q: Looking back 6 months, you have grown the team almost 10-fold. How have you managed to do that?

A: Our headquarters is in Tallinn where we are competing for local talent for local tech heavyweights like Bolt and Wise, and fast growth is surely a challenge here.

However, as the company is clearly mission-driven seeking to save the world, this resonates with many talented people who want to do more with their life than spend it on optimizing sales processes or launching another app.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: We started hiring in early 2020 when the world had entered lockdown so we are born remote. This enables us to join together some of the brightest minds who are seeking to leave a healthier planet for our children.

We have a 20-people science team, which is perhaps unusual for a startup, but crucial for our mission.
